Baird’s tapir

The MBR constitutes the most important area for the conservation of this species in Guatemala. Tapir was selected as a landscape species for the Living Landscape Program for its importance in the MBR landscape. We built the conservation landscape model for the species in the MBR as a tool to select sites to implement conservation interventions based on strategic decisions. According to the model the East of Laguna del Tigre National Park constitutes the largest area with highest quality habitat for the species in Guatemala. We have also evaluated the use of camera traps to monitor tapir’s visits to water holes as a tool for population evaluation.
