The Maya Biosphere Reserve (MBR) is the last stronghold for the white-lipped peccary in Guatemala; this is a highly endangered species due habitat loss and over hunting. The white-lipped peccary was selected as a landscape species for the MBR. The conservation landscape model for the species in the MBR is a tool that allows to select sites for conservation interventions based on strategic decisions. According to the model the high habitat quality is located in the East of the Laguna del Tigre National Park and the East of Mirador-Rio Azul National Park and Yaxhá Nakum Naranjo National Park. In addition, we have also evaluated the use of camera traps to monitor groups of peccaries visiting waterholes as a tool for population evaluation.
